This sudden hormonal crash can have a major impact on your brain chemistry and emotional state.

The Emotional Impact of Hormonal Fluctuations

1. The “Baby Blues”

About 80% of new moms experience the baby blues—a period of emotional sensitivity, tearfulness, irritability, and anxiety that typically starts a few days after birth and resolves within two weeks. This is largely driven by the abrupt drop in estrogen and progesterone after delivery.

4. Thyroid Changes

Some people experience postpartum thyroiditis, an inflammation of the thyroid that can cause mood symptoms, fatigue, and irritability. It’s often mistaken for depression or anxiety, so it’s important to get proper medical screening if symptoms feel extreme or unusual.

Hormones & Sleep: A Vicious Cycle

Lack of sleep worsens the impact of hormonal instability. And unfortunately, the postpartum period often comes with significant sleep disruption. This can further dysregulate cortisol (the stress hormone), compounding feelings of emotional overwhelm.

  • Your symptoms last longer than two weeks

  • You feel consistently sad, hopeless, or anxious

  • You're having trouble bonding with your baby
