FAQs About Our Therapy Services In Hamilton

  • Pregnancy and the postpartum period can bring intense emotional and physical changes. If you're dealing with mood swings, anxiety, sadness, irritability, or feeling overwhelmed, it's all common and natural, to an extent. But if these feelings persist, feel distressing, or interfere with daily life or bonding with your baby, support can make a real difference. Perinatal and postpartum therapy offers a safe space to talk openly and get tools to feel more like yourself again.

  • Difficult or traumatic birth experiences and pregnancy loss can leave emotional wounds that are hard to process alone. Therapy helps you work through grief, fear, guilt, or shock, so those experiences don't continue to affect your mental health or relationships. And we're here to provide you with the support you need.

  • If your child is struggling with anxiety, big emotions, behavioral changes, sleep problems, school challenges, or withdrawal, therapy can help them learn healthy ways to express and manage feelings. Child therapy also supports parents with tools to better understand and support their child at home.

  • Yes. Many parents feel guilt or shame when bonding with their child doesn't happen as expected, but this experience is more common than you may realize. Therapy helps reduce overwhelm, address emotional blocks, and support you in building a secure, nurturing connection with your child. All in a comfortable, judgment-free space.

  • Absolutely. Becoming a parent often brings up memories or patterns from our own upbringing. Therapy can help you understand how past experiences influence your reactions, reduce triggers, and develop new ways of parenting that feel healthier and more aligned with the parent you want to be.

  • As registered social workers, we are required to keep all information shared in sessions confidential. There are some exceptions to confidentiality, which include:

Disclosure of the intent to harm yourself or someone else.

    • The abuse of a child under the age of 16 or abuse by a licensed professional

    • If case notes are subpoenaed to Court

    • If you have signed a consent to release information to other care providers

  • Mountain Brow Counselling is located on the Hamilton Mountain at 848 Fennell Avenue East.

  • We use an online portal called Owl Practice, which allows clients to book or reschedule their sessions conveniently online. We always encourage clients if they have a specific date/time that works best for their schedule, to book well in advance and even book several sessions at a time to maintain their spot. If you have questions before you book, you can always send us a contact form (below)!

  • Yes! We offer direct billing to most insurance providers. During your consultation call or first session, we can go over your insurance details and get everything set up.

If your insurance provider does not permit direct billing, we’ll provide you with a receipt containing all the information you need to submit a claim yourself.

  • Your appointment is reserved just for you. If you are unable to attend your appointment, you are required to provide at least 48 hours' advanced notice. A late cancellation leaves a hole in the therapist's day that could have otherwise been filled. As such, the client agrees to pay 100% of the session fee if they cancel their appointment with less than 48 hours' notice.

Please note that all non-emergency cancellations (e.g., general illness, weather concerns, sudden schedule change, unexpected commitment, forgetting or mistaking the appointment time) will be charged the regular session fee. Virtual or telephone sessions will be offered when it may not be feasible to attend in-person if that was the originally scheduled appointment method.

  • The cost of therapy in Hamilton depends on the therapist you are working with and the type of counselling you’re seeking. At our Hamilton practice, individual therapy sessions typically range from $180–$190 for a 55-minute session, depending on the therapist. Extended sessions may also be available if you need more time to explore complex concerns or work through specific challenges.

For couples and family counselling in Hamilton, session fees range from $200–$210 for a 55-minute session and $300–$315 for an 85-minute session, depending on the therapist you are seeing. These longer sessions allow partners or family members the time and space needed to work through relationship dynamics and communication patterns together.

Many people seeking therapy in Hamilton are able to use extended health benefits or insurance coverage. Psychotherapy provided by a Registered Social Worker or Registered Psychotherapist is covered by many insurance providers. We also offer direct billing to many insurance companies, which can simplify the process.

  • Finding the right therapist in Hamilton starts with learning about the professionals available and identifying someone whose approach fits your needs. A good place to begin is by visiting the Our Team section of our website, where you can meet the therapists who work at our Hamilton counselling office, learn about their specialties, and see what types of therapy they provide.

If you’re unsure which therapist would be the best match, we encourage you to book a free consultation. During this consultation, we can talk about what you’re looking for in therapy and help match you with a therapist in Hamilton who has experience supporting people with similar concerns. This helps ensure you start therapy with someone who feels like the right fit.

  • In many cases, therapy in Hamilton and across Ontario is covered by extended health benefits. Psychotherapy services provided by a Registered Social Worker or Registered Psychotherapist are commonly reimbursed by insurance providers.

At our Hamilton therapy practice, we offer direct billing to most insurance providers. During your consultation call or your first therapy session in Hamilton, we can review your insurance details with you and help set everything up so the process is as simple as possible.

If your insurance provider does not allow direct billing, we will provide you with a receipt containing all the information needed to submit your claim to your insurance company. Many clients seeking counselling in Hamilton find that reimbursement through their insurance provider helps make therapy more accessible.

Because coverage can vary between plans, we recommend checking with your insurance provider before your first therapy session in Hamilton to confirm the details of your mental health benefits.

  • The type of therapist you should see in Hamilton depends on the concerns you’re experiencing and the kind of support you’re looking for.
