What Is Trauma?

Trauma can result from a single event (such as a car accident or assault) or a series of situations, even seemingly insignificant (e.g., bullying at school). Sometimes, trauma symptoms can emerge many years after the situation that caused it.

If you’re struggling with symptoms such as:

  • Anxiety

  • Flashbacks

  • Nightmares

  • Emotional detachment

  • And even difficulty trusting others

You may be struggling with unresolved trauma or PTSD. Unresolved trauma can adversely affect your daily functioning, relationships, and overall mental and emotional well-being. Thankfully, you’re not alone. Trauma therapy can help you overcome a difficult past and regain a sense of security and control in life.

Our experienced therapists have been helping clients struggling with trauma for years. And we use a proven, evidence-based approach that’s effective in trauma and PTSD treatment.

Discover EMDR Therapy in Hamilton

Unlock lasting healing through EMDR, a powerful approach to overcoming trauma and reclaiming peace.

At our practice, we are committed to helping you heal from past emotional wounds and traumas, and EMDR therapy can be a powerful tool on this journey.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a specialized, evidence-based therapy designed to help people process and heal from distressing memories, life experiences, and other emotional challenges. EMDR therapy works by guiding the brain to reprocess distressing memories in a way that reduces their emotional impact.

What is EMDR therapy?

The benefits of EMDR counselling are that it is non-invasive and doesn’t require extensive discussion of the trauma. It also works relatively quickly for many compared to traditional talk therapy. Certainly, every client and their circumstances are unique, but 6-12 sessions is quite common with some clients needing more. Lastly, EMDR is suitable whether you are experiencing an acute concern or something more long-term.

Why should I try EMDR counselling?

Common concerns we treat where EMDR therapy may be a good fit include:

  • Birth (and other types of) trauma

  • Having a child who requires significant medical attention

  • Attachment wounds and childhood trauma

  • Traumatic bereavement

  • Unresolved grief and loss

  • Academic or work-related failures

Through EMDR counselling, we'll work together to empower you to heal, grow, and reclaim your peace of mind.

How Does EMDR Therapy Help With Trauma & PTSD?

emdr hamilton, trauma therapy

EMDR therapy works by gently guiding you to recall a troubling memory while focusing on a series of eye movements, sounds, or taps. This process helps your brain reprocess the memory in a way that reduces its emotional charge and allows you to feel more at peace.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn’t require you to go into deep detail about the trauma. Instead, it helps you to change the way it affects you now, empowering you to move forward with greater emotional freedom.

If you’ve been struggling to move past distressing experiences, feel present and safe in your current life, trauma therapy in Hamilton with EMDR can offer a path to healing in a safe and supportive environment.

FAQs About Trauma & EMDR Therapy

  • Each session costs $180-190. Sessions are 55 minutes in length.

Sometimes we recommend extended EMDR sessions (85 minutes) which cost $270-285.

We accept e-transfer payments or credit card. Psychotherapy with a Registered Social Worker or Registered Psychotherapist is covered by many insurance providers or extended health benefits. We offer direct billing to many insurance providers.

In the event we cannot direct bill, we will issue a receipt with all of the information you will require for your insurance claim. We recommend checking with your provider before our first session.

  • One of the most important aspects when engaging in therapy is your comfort and trust in your therapist. You should have a good sense upon our initial session if your therapist is the right fit for you. We offer a complimentary 20-minute phone conversation to determine fit and answer any other questions you may have. BOOK NOW to find out if we are the right fit.

  • Your appointment is reserved just for you. If you are unable to attend your appointment, you are required to provide at least 48 hours advanced notice. A late cancellation leaves a hole in the therapist's day that could have otherwise been filled. As such, the client agrees to pay 100% of the session fee if they cancel their appointment with less than 48 hours notice. Please note, all non-emergency cancellations (e.g. general illness, weather concerns, sudden schedule change, unexpected commitment, forgetting or mistaking the ap‐ pointment time) will be charged the regular session fee. Virtual or telephone sessions will be offered when it may not be feasible to attend in-person if that was the originally scheduled appointment method. We appreciate your help in valuing your treatment, the treatment of others, and respecting your therapist's time.

  • As registered social workers, we are required to keep all information shared in session confidential. There are some exceptions to confidentiality which include:

    • Disclosure of the intent to harm yourself or someone else.

    • The abuse of a child under the age of 16 or abuse by a licensed professional.

    • If case notes are subpoenaed to Court.

    • If you have signed consent to release information to other care providers.

  • Yes, therapy is highly effective in helping individuals, couples, and families with a wide range of mental health and emotional challenges. While this is a good thing, there are important factors to consider including finding the right treatment approach that matches the concerns, fit between client and therapist, client commitment, and having patience for the process.

  • The duration of therapy can vary widely from person to person and depends on several factors, including an individual’s specific concerns, the type of therapy being used, and the level of engagement. While there’s no set timeline, most clients see me for approximately 12 sessions, with some attending a little less and some attending more. We always encourage open communication so that we can adjust our treatment plan as needed to achieve your desired outcomes.

  • Mountain Brow Counselling is located on the Hamilton Mountain at 804 Fennell Avenue East.

  • We use an online portal called Owl Practice which allows clients to book or reschedule their sessions conveniently online. We always encourage clients if they have a specific date/time that works best for their schedule, to book well in advance and even book several sessions at a time to maintain their spot.

  • While EMDR therapy is available in person at our Hamilton office, we also offer it virtually to residents across Ontario through our secure online platform. Research shows that EMDR is just as effective online as it is in person, so it truly comes down to what feels most comfortable and convenient for you.

  • Yes! We offer direct billing to most insurance providers. During your consultation call or first session, we can go over your insurance details and get everything set up.

If your insurance provider does not permit direct billing, we’ll provide you with a receipt containing all the information you need to submit a claim yourself.
